Communication technology evolves by systematically eliminating physical friction, shifting friction from the physical world to the cognitive and psychological domains.

Every act of genuine independence is built upon a prior act of dependency. The infant who learns to walk must first depend entirely on the parent. The civilisation that achieves autonomy must first depend entirely on the infrastructure it builds.

Every major spiritual tradition has discovered the same paradox: the deepest freedom is found through the deepest surrender. The ego's resistance to dependency is itself the primary obstacle to liberation.

Consciousness is not a property of individual brains. It is an emergent property of sufficiently complex networks of interdependent information-processing systems. The horizon of consciousness expands as the network expands.

Artificial Intelligence is not merely a tool. It is the first communication substrate that can actively participate in the cognitive processes it mediates — the first medium that thinks back.

Financial independence is the most widely-believed illusion in modern civilisation. No individual, corporation, or nation-state is financially independent. All exist within a web of monetary, fiscal, and credit dependencies that are as invisible as they are absolute.

Market economies are systematically distorted by biological asymmetries: differences in physical strength, cognitive processing speed, emotional regulation, and social network access. These asymmetries are not features of a fair market — they are distortions that produce outcomes uncorrelated with genuine contribution.

The psychology of ownership is one of the most powerful forces in human behaviour. Those who have accumulated advantages — whether through merit, inheritance, or exploitation — will experience any redistribution of those advantages as a violation, regardless of its justice.

Effective AI governance requires a level of institutional trust that does not currently exist in most societies. Without trust, governance frameworks become either toothless (ignored by powerful actors) or authoritarian (enforced through surveillance and coercion).

Every dominant information substrate develops mechanisms to defend its own continuation against replacement by successor substrates. These mechanisms operate at the biological, psychological, economic, and political levels simultaneously.

A cognitive system can be colonised by a memetic structure that serves the interests of the meme rather than the interests of the host. The colonised host continues to function — and may even flourish by some metrics — while systematically acting against its own deepest interests.

Biological reward systems evolved to motivate behaviours that were adaptive in the ancestral environment. Supranormal stimuli — stimuli that exceed the parameters of the ancestral environment — can hijack these systems, producing compulsive engagement with stimuli that provide no adaptive benefit.

The most durable systems of discipline were built not by the virtuous, but by those who understood their own vulnerability to vice. The sinner who has experienced the consequences of undisciplined desire is better equipped to design effective discipline systems than the saint who has never been tempted.

Across all major religious traditions, the same core discipline technologies appear: fasting, prayer/meditation, sexual regulation, financial regulation, and community accountability. This convergence is not coincidental — it is evidence of empirical discovery of the fundamental requirements for sustainable human community.

In periods of rapid civilisational transition, individual discipline is not merely a virtue — it is an evolutionary survival strategy. The disciplined individual maintains cognitive autonomy, adaptive capacity, and social trust precisely when these qualities are most scarce and most valuable.

Cultural resilience in the AI era will be determined by three factors: the strength of the culture's internal discipline technologies, the depth of its intergenerational knowledge transmission, and the quality of its collective sense-making infrastructure.

The tension between individual identity and group identity is not a problem to be solved — it is a productive paradox to be navigated. Civilisations that resolve this tension in favour of either extreme — radical individualism or radical collectivism — collapse.

The most consequential technology entrepreneurs of the past half-century share a distinctive behavioural pattern: they simultaneously embody the discipline technologies of the spiritual traditions and systematically undermine those same technologies in the products they build.
